The much-anticipated Bhogapuram International Airport, officially known as Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, is on the verge of becoming operational, marking a major milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure development.
Built at an estimated cost of around ₹5,000 crore by GMR Airports, the greenfield facility is expected to significantly enhance connectivity for North Andhra, boosting tourism, business, and regional economic growth.
The state government has requested the Prime Minister’s Office to confirm July 5, 2026, for the formal inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though the date remains subject to the PM’s schedule. In the event of any postponement, the inauguration is likely to occur between July 10 and 15.
Commercial flight operations are anticipated to commence shortly thereafter, with full services shifting from Visakhapatnam Airport around July 8 or later in the month.
Project highlights
Spanning a vast area in Bhogapuram village, the airport features modern facilities designed to handle both domestic and international traffic. Recent validation flights, including one operated by Air India with the Civil Aviation Minister on board, have confirmed the airport’s operational readiness. The first phase includes a runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, passenger terminals, cargo facilities, and supporting infrastructure.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has been closely monitoring the project’s progress as part of the state’s broader vision for infrastructure-led development. The airport is poised to serve as a key gateway for Visakhapatnam and surrounding regions, addressing the growing demand for air traffic in North Coastal Andhra.
Strategic and economic significance
Once fully operational, Bhogapuram Airport is expected to decongest Visakhapatnam’s existing airport and support the region’s industrial and tourism sectors. It aligns with national initiatives to expand aviation networks and is seen as a catalyst for employment generation and investment attraction in the area.
The airport will retain the IATA code VTZ initially associated with Visakhapatnam.
With trial runs completed and final regulatory clearances in place, authorities are optimistic about a smooth transition. The project underscores Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to becoming a logistics and connectivity hub in South India.
As the state prepares for the launch, local stakeholders anticipate enhanced travel options and economic opportunities. Updates on the exact inauguration and operations schedule will be confirmed by the PMO in the coming days.
