A devastating mishap at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL)-operated Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) on Monday evening left eight workers dead and six others critically injured, as a sudden explosion involving a ladle of molten steel unleashed a fireball and sent hundreds of tonnes of superheated metal cascading across the floor.

The incident occurred around 4.15–4.40 PM on June 8 in the Continuous Casting Department (CCD) at Machine-2 of Steel Melting Shop-1 (SMS-1). According to official accounts from the Ministry of Steel and plant sources, the caster was in operation when a severe explosion erupted just before the slide gate opened to pour hot crude steel from the ladle into the tundish. A massive ball of fire shot upward to the ceiling, igniting Overhead Crane-2 and triggering an intense blaze as molten metal spilled uncontrollably.

CISF fire wing personnel responded swiftly alongside other emergency teams, deploying water sprays through diffuser branches to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading. Rescue operations were hampered by the extreme temperatures, as molten steel exceeds 1,500–1,600°C, making the scene chaotic and perilous for those on duty.

The injured suffered severe burn injuries, with some reports indicating up to 90% body burns. They were rushed to hospitals, including Seven Hills Hospital in Visakhapatnam, where they continue to receive treatment in critical but stable condition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced ex gratia relief for the families of the deceased. Union ministers and state officials have pledged a thorough review of safety protocols at the facility. RINL management and the Steel Ministry have initiated separate investigations into the root cause, focusing on possible mechanical failure, ladle integrity, or procedural lapses during the casting process. Trade unions have raised longstanding concerns about maintenance and safety standards at the plant, calling for immediate reforms.

Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, one of India’s major integrated steel facilities and a key public sector employer in Andhra Pradesh, has a history of occasional incidents, though this marks one of the deadliest in recent years. Operations in the affected section remain suspended as authorities assess structural damage and clear the site.

Further updates are expected as the probe progresses.
