Houses ‘shaken’ as Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake hits Melbourne, Australia

Residents in Melbourne reported their houses shaking and items falling off their shelves as an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit the south-eastern state of Victoria in Australia at around 9.20 AM. Australia is roughly 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Indian time.

The United States Geological Survey noted the quake’s magnitude as 5.9 and reported it to be centered at 38 km south of Mount Buller, Australia, at a depth of 10 km.

Although people reported feeling the earthquake as far as in Sydney, no damage was reported.

Australian Media report that about 1000 homes in Melbourne are left without a power supply.

The residents from the suburbs of Footscray and Northcote reported damage to the houses. Aftershocks were reported.

Some videos are being shared for a while now. Simon Love of 10 News shared this video which shows the damage to a building on Chapel Street.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is in the US for United Nations General Assembly and other meetings. He expressed relief as no injuries were being reported. There is also no Tsunami warning.

Australia has the finest disaster response teams, assured PM Scott Morrison, reiterating his faith in Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, who is now in charge.
