A major reversal in one of Andhra Pradesh’s most politically charged cases has thrown fresh light on the murky intersection of crime, policing, and politics. The state Crime Investigation Department (CID) has filed a chargesheet naming Mumbai-based actress and model Kadambari Jethwani as the prime accused in an extortion racket, nearly two-and-a-half years after her dramatic arrest sparked a crackdown on senior police officers.
The dual cases at the heart of the storm
At the core lie two separate but intertwined investigations.
In the first case, dating back to February 2024, YSRCP functionary and film producer Kukkala Vidyasagar accused Jethwani of systematically extorting money from him over a decade. According to the CID’s latest findings, she allegedly used threats of false criminal complaints and the release of private photographs to demand funds. Investigators point to bank records showing transfers totaling at least ₹6.7 lakh into accounts linked to Jethwani, supported by call data, multiple phone numbers, and electronic evidence.
The second case emerged after the TDP-led coalition assumed power. Ms. Jethwani alleged that she and her family were illegally detained and harassed during the probe into the extortion complaint. This prompted the suspension of three prominent IPS officers – former Intelligence Chief PSR Anjaneyulu (DGP-rank), ex-Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata, and ex-Deputy Commissioner Vishal Gunni, for alleged procedural violations, including acting on verbal directives without proper documentation.
Political fireworks erupt
The CID chargesheet has reignited fierce debate.
YSRCP leaders, including former minister Ambati Rambabu, described it as proof of a ‘political witch-hunt’ against honest officers who were merely doing their duty on a genuine complaint. They argue the current government’s actions unfairly tarnished the reputation of the police personnel.
The ruling dispensation, however, insists the matters are distinct. Officials maintain that Jethwani can face prosecution for alleged financial crimes while any proven lapses by officers in handling her arrest must also be addressed. The state government has criticised social media campaigns for deliberately conflating the two issues to score political points.
Meanwhile, actress Jethwani has strongly rejected the charges, calling the investigation flawed and one-sided. In a public statement, she maintained her innocence, disputed the financial claims, and reiterated that she and her family were victims of unlawful detention. She has vowed to continue her legal battle in court.
Conflicting investigations puzzle the public
The latest development places the Andhra Pradesh police in an uncomfortable position, as one arm of the force now appears to validate the original complaint while another scrutinised the methods used to pursue it. Legal experts note that courts will have the final say on both the extortion allegations and the conduct of the officers.
As hearings continue, including on the CID’s move to drop Jethwani’s family members from the chargesheet, the case highlights longstanding concerns about political influence over law enforcement and the importance of meticulous adherence to legal procedures in sensitive investigations.
