Gunfire erupted outside the main ballroom of the Washington Hilton on Saturday night during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, prompting the rapid evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several Cabinet members in what federal authorities are investigating as a suspected assassination attempt targeting the president and his administration.

The incident unfolded at approximately 8:34 PM EDT as the black-tie event, attended by hundreds of journalists, administration officials, and guests, was underway. A 31-year-old man identified as Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, charged at a US Secret Service security checkpoint in the hotel lobby near the metal detectors leading to the banquet hall. Armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, Allen sprinted past security, opened fire, and exchanged shots with law enforcement officers before being tackled and arrested on the scene.

One Secret Service agent was struck by gunfire but suffered no serious injuries thanks to a bulletproof vest and was later released from the hospital. No other injuries were reported among attendees, who ducked under tables as panic spread through the packed ballroom. Secret Service agents swiftly escorted Mr. Trump and top officials out of the venue while the area was secured.

Allen, described by law enforcement sources as a tutor, computer engineer, and amateur video game developer, had sent writings to family members roughly 10 minutes before the attack. In the messages, he referred to himself as the ‘Friendly Federal Assassin’ and expressed opposition to Trump administration policies, stating it was his duty to target administration officials.

Investigators believe the act was politically motivated and that President Trump was likely the primary target, though Allen reportedly told authorities after his arrest that he was focused on ‘administration officials’ more broadly. A federal official familiar with the case described him as a lone actor.

President Trump addressed the incident in a news conference Sunday morning, calling it a clear assassination attempt and praising the Secret Service for their swift response. ‘They were fast – faster than last time,’ he said, referencing the 2024 rally shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The White House Correspondents’ Association later announced the dinner would be rescheduled. This marks the third time since 2024 that Mr. Trump has faced an apparent threat from an armed individual in proximity. The previous attempts occurred at a July 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump was grazed by a bullet and one spectator was killed, and a September 2024 incident at his Florida golf club. Federal probes into those earlier attacks concluded the perpetrators acted alone.

As of Monday morning, the FBI and Secret Service continue their investigation into Allen’s background, digital footprint, and any potential accomplices. He faces multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination of the president. No motive beyond the anti-administration writings has been publicly detailed, and officials have not released additional information on his mental health or prior threats.
