India’s Lovlina Borgohain lost the semifinal match against Busenaz Surmeneli in the women’s welterweight (64-69 kg) Boxing. Lovlina, already assured of a medal by making it to the semifinals, lost to the Turkish boxer 0-5. She now wins a Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Lovlina Borgohain is only the third ever from India to win an Olympic Medal in Boxing.

The boxer from Assam, Lovlina, made it to the semifinals with some impressive performances against formidable opponents such as former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Taiwan and Germany’s Nadine Apetz but could not repeat her dominance in the ring.

Busenaz Surmeneli, winner of the World Championship in 2019, defeated Ukraine’s Anna Lysenko in the Quarterfinals to face off with the Indian boxer in the semifinals.

Both Lovlina and Busenaz are 23 years old and have never competed against each other prior to the semifinals at the Tokyo Olympics.
