Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump convened for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit here today, marking their first in-person engagement in over 16 months amid ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.

The leaders met at the lakeside resort town hosting the 52nd G7 Summit, which runs from June 15 to 17 under French President Emmanuel Macron’s chairmanship. Discussions centered on advancing a potential trade agreement, ensuring maritime security for Indian seafarers, defense cooperation, energy, and broader regional stability.

Mr. Trump described the conversation as ‘very good’ and noted that the two countries are actively working on trade deals. He praised Modi as a ‘tough negotiator’ and a ‘killer’ in dealings, adding a personal touch by calling him a ‘beautiful-looking man’ and an ‘angel’ while emphasizing their strong rapport. US leader Trump also indicated he plans to visit India in the future.

PM Modi raised the safety of Indian seafarers as a priority, particularly in light of recent tensions in the Gulf region. This comes weeks after an incident involving US actions in the Strait of Hormuz that resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors, prompting concerns about freedom of navigation and civilian protection in key shipping routes. Mr. Trump acknowledged the risks inherent in seafaring and reiterated US support.

Trade negotiations also featured prominently, building on prior technical discussions. US officials had indicated ahead of the summit that while progress continues, a final deal was not expected to be sealed in Évian. Further talks, including a planned visit by the US Trade Representative to India, are anticipated soon.

The meeting occurred against a backdrop of global issues dominating the G7 agenda, including the US-Iran peace process, the situation in Ukraine, artificial intelligence, and economic resilience. India, as an outreach partner, participated alongside other invited nations.

Both sides expressed optimism about deepening the strategic partnership. Mr. Trump highlighted mutual interests in supply chains, technology, and security, while Mr. Modi stressed collaborative opportunities in a multipolar world. The leaders were also seen interacting cordially during group sessions and the traditional family photo.

This encounter is viewed as an opportunity to reset and reinforce US-India relations following periods of strain over tariffs, geopolitical flashpoints, and the recent seafarer tragedy. Analysts note that personal chemistry between the two leaders could help bridge differences on trade and regional matters.

No major announcements emerged immediately from the closed-door talks, but both delegations described the tone as constructive. The G7 Summit concludes later today with sessions on AI and global economic challenges.
