As the Russia-Ukraine war nears a year, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, visited Kyiv on Feb 20, 2023. Although the visit was largely a surprise, the Russian authorities were notified of it hours ahead for security reasons.

President Biden, who left the US for a 3-day trip to Poland, landed in the eastern European country and then took an hours-long train ride to Ukraine’s capital.

A strong statement by the US

Although other countries assisted Ukraine with weapons or humanitarian aid in its war against Russia, the United States has been Ukraine’s biggest benefactor. President Biden’s visit will be seen as nothing short of a guarantee to support Ukraine in the days ahead.

At a joint press conference with President Zelenskyy, Mr. Biden hailed Ukraine’s resilience and said that Russia was wrong in estimating it could outlast Ukraine and its allies.

A new package worth 500 million USD, including ammunition for HIMARS, was announced.
