Telangana barred from buying electricity; Power outages possible

Telangana, on Friday, could not purchase electricity from the Indian Energy Exchange owing to outstanding dues from its power distribution companies (DISCOM) to power generation companies (GENCO) across India.

The state was set to buy 20 million units (MU) of electricity.

The central authorities originally placed Telangana’s dues at Rs. 1360 Cr but later corrected the amount to Rs. 52.85 Cr. The amount is the late payment surcharge for not paying the original dues on time, officials said.

After buying electric power, a DISCOM is required to clear its dues to a GENCO within 45 days.

A day earlier, thirteen states were barred from buying electricity on similar grounds. However, upon verification, states including Maharashtra, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh have been cleared to buy electric power.

Prabhakara Rao, the CMD of Telangana GENCO, cautioned the public of possible power outages and requested cooperation. The state witnessed a power demand of over 12,000 Megawatts on Friday.
