PM Modi receives Bhutan’s highest civilian honor

PM Modi conferred with the Order of the Druk Gyalpo

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, Bhutan’s highest civilian decoration, by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in a public ceremony at Tendrelthang, Thimphu, on March 22, 2024.

The Order of the Druk Gyalpo honors lifetime achievement and is the pinnacle of the honor system in Bhutan.

Mr. Modi became the first foreign leader to have received this.

Expressing satisfaction at the cherished friendship between India and Bhutan, Mr. Modi conveyed his appreciation for the successive Druk Gyalpos in forging the bilateral ties between the two countries.

Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck announced the award during his country’s 114th National Day celebrations held in December 2021.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Bhutanese counterpart, Tshering Tobgay, in Thimphu.

Earlier, people greeted the Indian leader throughout the journey from Paro to Thimphu. Mr. Modi expressed gratitude for the huge public reception.

According to a press release, both leaders discussed the multi-faceted bilateral relations and agreed to enhance cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture, youth exchange, environment and forestry, and tourism.

Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Tobgay witnessed the exchange of several MoUs and Agreements on energy, trade, digital connectivity, space, and agriculture.
