Janata Dal (United) Chief Nitish Kumar resigned as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Jan 28, 2024.

Nitish Kumar’s resignation marks the end of the Mahagathbandhan alliance between the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Congress. The alliance has been in power since 2022.

Nitish Kumar is likely to be sworn in as the Chief Minister again, as early as today, with support from the BJP.

The RJD called Mr. Nitish Kumar an opportunist and said the Bihar public will give him a fitting reply in the coming election.

Nitish Kumar will likely rejoin the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He had previously been an NDA partner for over a decade. Lok Sabha Elections are mere months away.

Both the BJP and JD(U) held separate meetings on Sunday to chalk out the details.
