Mandous makes landfall at Mamallapuram near Chennai

Cyclone Mandous made landfall near Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu on Friday night. Chennai, roughly 50 km away, witnessed heavy rain and wind.

According to weather.com – “It (Mandous) crossed the coast as a Cyclonic Storm, packing a maximum sustained wind speed of 65-75 kph, gusting to 85 kph.”

Losing strength after the landfall, Mandous is currently classified as a depression and is moving northwest.

According to IMD, the districts in the line of the moving depression will witness wind speeds of around 50 km per hour and even lesser wind speeds by evening.

But rainfall is likely to be ‘heavy 64.5mm-204mm)’ at isolated locations across north Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh for the next 24 hours, warned the IMD.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan held a review meeting with officials and appealed to the public to exercise caution in the face of heavy rainfall.
