Landslide in Himachal Pradesh – Thirteen bodies recovered; search on halt

The landslide in Himachal Pradesh on August 11th prompted a frantic search and rescue operation to save tens of people trapped under the rubble.

Thirteen dead bodies have been recovered, and fourteen people are rescued so far.

However, as of 1 PM on August 12th, the search and rescue operation is halted owing to unfavorable conditions at the site.

Rescue Operation on August 11th

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police released a drone video footage yesterday showing the 200m stretch of rubble, adding that the ill-fated bus is yet to be located.

The ITBP has posted this video from the location of the landslide showing the volatility of the area.

Multiple vehicles, including a bus and a truck, are buried at the site of the landslide on the Reckong Peo – Shimla Highway in Kinnaur District, Himachal Pradesh.

The HRTC (Haryana Road Transport Corporation) bus was reportedly carrying around 40 passengers. Further clarity on the number of passengers is awaited.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police teams have rushed to the site, roughly 200 km from the state capital Shimla. NDRF and state police are also involved in the rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur and assured all possible support.

Not even a month ago, on the 25th of July, a landslide in Sangla-Chitkul road in Kannaur claimed nine lives.
