Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated following a deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus that resulted in the death of two Iranian generals two weeks ago. The situation has been further complicated by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with both nations issuing threats and warnings of retaliation.

Israel and Iran trade warnings

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that Iran’s “brave men” will punish Israel, while one of his advisers has warned that Israeli embassies “are no longer safe.” This follows a statement from Iran’s armed forces, which are reportedly awaiting the Supreme Leader’s command to attack Israel.

In response to the threats, Israel has issued a warning that it will retaliate in Iran if attacked from its territory. The country’s foreign minister has threatened that Israeli forces could strike Iran directly.

Israel has heightened its alert status in response to threats of retaliation by Iran. Israel is reportedly preparing for a possible attack by Iran, with local media indicating that high-level meetings are taking place to plan for potential retaliation from Tehran.

US pledges support to Israel

Amid the escalating tensions, the United States said it would support Israel, with President Joe Biden vowing an “ironclad” commitment to Israel’s security. The U.S. has also warned of an imminent Iranian attack on Israel, with the top U.S. general for the Middle East, Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, recently traveling to Israel to discuss the situation.

Meanwhile, the international community has urged for restraint and de-escalation. Australia has urged Iran not to escalate tensions in the Middle East. India issued cautionary advice against traveling to either Iran or Israel.
