Lai Ching-te, the candidate of the ruling DPP, defeated his two primary opponents, Hou Yu-ih (Kuomintang – KMT) and Ko Wen-je (Taiwan People’s Party – TPP).

Mr. Lai Ching-te secured 40.2% of the vote, while Mr. Hou Yu-ih received 34.3%, and Mr. Ko Wen-je managed 25.5%.

Mr. Lai has become the first president in Taiwan’s current electoral system to win a third consecutive term for his party.

It also signals continued public support for the DPP’s stance of maintaining Taiwan’s separate identity and independence from China despite warnings and pressure from the mainland.

However, despite the victory in the presidential election, the DPP lost its majority in the legislature, leaving no party with sole control.
