Facebook changes its name to Meta

Facebook will rebrand itself as ‘Meta,’ announced the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. The company’s sign, a blue infinity symbol, started showing up over the last few hours.

The announcement left many wondering if Facebook would no longer be known by its famous name. But the social media platform Facebook will remain as it is, as will Whatsapp and Instagram.

They could certainly incorporate new technologies.

Why the name change? Why Meta?

The name change is prompted by the emergence of new technologies and how Mark Zuckerberg envisions the future of communication.

Facebook, while an iconic social media platform, does not represent everything that the company does or intends to do, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The company ‘Meta’ wants to revolutionize the way people communicate.

Mr. Zuckerberg has been betting big on technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. The FB CEO says the renaming of their corporate identity will better reflect what they intend to do – create a digital metaverse.

For example, a user can send their hologram to a professional meeting or a social gathering.

From meetings to shoppings, the immersive experience will make the user feel that they are actually present in the desired location.

“The defining quality of the metaverse will be a feeling of presence” – Mark Zuckerberg
